Reap the Benefits of a Prenatal Massage

prenatal massage with Christy M Duncan Massage in the Wesley Heights neighborhood in Charlotte

It’s common knowledge that massage is beneficial to those who need help relaxing. And for women, it can be hard to relax during a pregnancy.

Prenatal massages may not only help you relax, but may also help you sleep, as well as relieve joint, neck and back pain, leg cramping, and sciatica. Additionally, it can reduce swelling in your hands and feet (assuming that swelling isn't a result of preeclampsia), relieve carpal tunnel pain, and alleviate headaches and sinus congestion, all of which are frequently experienced pregnancy problems. According to some studies, massage may also alleviate some symptoms of depression without resorting to medication.

Before your massage, we’ll discuss your specific needs and discomforts, a bit of medical and pregnancy information (which will always remain confidential), as well as how far along in your pregnancy you are. The more of an overall bigger picture I have of your health, the more it will help me gauge how to customize your massage to benefit you most.

As a certified prenatal massage therapist, I have gone through special training and can assure the safety of you and your baby are paramount. During the service, if you’re familiar with massages, you’ll notice less pressure than with a non-prenatal massage, particularly in the lower back. There are also pressure points around your scalp, hands, ankles and feet that can cause contractions, so depending on how far along you are, we may avoid those areas altogether. You’ll typically be on your side or in a reclined position; lying on your back could create pressure that could cause other issues, and lying on your stomach would just be uncomfortable. We’ll definitely get you into a position that is comfortable.

I offer prenatal massages in 60- and 90-minute sessions. You can purchase prenatal massages one-by-one or in four-session packages.
